After Successful Vote To Join CWA, Brooklyn Retail Workers Enter Contract Negotiations With Verizon Wireless

By Bianca Cunningham – Sales Rep, Brooklyn, NY Bargaining has begun between Verizon Wireless and the employees of Brooklyn. After a long fight for union recognition where we voted 39 to 19 to join CWA, we are thrilled to enter this next stage. My name is Bianca Cunningham; I am a Sales Rep in the Bensonhurst store in Brooklyn. I am joined on the bargaining team with CWA Staff Rep Pat O’Neal, VP of Brooklyn CWA Local 1109 Roger Young, VZW Sales Rep Tatiana Hill, from Kings Highway, and VZW Customer Service Rep Nawal Joseph, from Bay Ridge. Our priorities at the bargaining table were determined by a survey that all of our coworkers filled out. At the table for Verizon Wireless is a representative from operations and a representative from HR, and a VZW lawyer. Talks began this past on Monday in the MetLife building in Midtown Manhattan. The overall mood was friendly and Verizon stressed the importance of flexibility for the business while also encouraging an informal and open dialogue about the issues. In the beginning stages we are spending time gathering information and asking questions supporting the issues. It really feels great to sit across from the powers that be allowing us to voice our concerns and have them listen and answer. Here in Brooklyn, we stood together and formed a strong union. It wasn’t easy but now managers, district managers and corporate respect us and it shows. We hope that we will be able to work with the company to get a fair first contract that includes a grievance and arbitration procedure, just cause, fair metrics, and more. We also want to encourage other VZW workers to overcome their fear and join the party!
