14,500 American Airlines Ticket Agents Vote Overwhelmingly to Join CWA

By Janet Elston, American Airlines Agent, Texas   After a 22 yearlong effort to obtain union representation, the Passenger Service workgroup at American Airlines finally achieved what most thought was the impossible. An overwhelming 86% yes vote to become members of the Communications Workers of America. BAM! Over the years we faced a lot of adversity.  CWA stepped up to the plate and we formed Local 6001, American Airlines Passenger Service Association (AAPSA) in Euless, TX. CWA was instrumental and assisted us every step on our journey.   It took many thousands of hours from volunteers to get to our victory. It was never easy. We worked it, every single day. Once we got one person on board, they would get another person on board. One person at a time. Until we had a legion to support the effort. Our company spent millions of dollars over the two decade period of time to brainwash a lot of our colleagues. They hired outside union busting firms to do their dirty work. CWA gave us the guidance and information we needed to make informed decisions on our campaigning. They had our backs every step of the way. Please do not be afraid to speak up, stand up and voice up. Come together in unity and solidarity. Become a force to be reckoned with. You will succeed with perseverance. Go forward with determination. I wish you well in your journey. Take back the labor movement. Never, ever, give up. Ever.

At Verizon Communications, The Union Means Security, A Voice, and Justice on the Job

By Jen Guilmette, Customer Service Rep, Verizon Communications, Andover, MA I have worked for Verizon Communications for the past 15 years and have been a member of the Union, Communication Workers of America, for just as long. Over the years I have witnessed and learned continually about the benefits of being a Union Worker. Being a Union member is not just about our better paying jobs and benefits, it’s also about the fact that as Union members we all stick together as a group and fight for what is right, what is just, and what is honest. After working at Verizon for a short period of time I began to witness the Union in action protecting my brothers and sisters from unjust discipline, and really caring about the well-being of all of the members. Because the union is run by the members, including me, it always looks out for everyone equally. My thoughts and opinions are listened too and taken seriously. Unlike my friends in non-union jobs, I don’t have to worry about sneezing in the wrong direction and losing my job. I know I am protected and feel like a valued member of a big family.   As time comes and goes and the economy has its ups and downs I have witnessed many friends and family become victims of corporate downsizing, and off-shoring. These same people are now waiting in unemployment lines and scrounging for lower paying jobs in a thin marketplace.  Seeing what happened to the people I care about, assured me that the best thing I ever did was becoming a Union member.   I have the peace of mind when I go home at night that my job will still be there when I wake up in the morning. I have the peace of mind that all my coworker’s families are protected because we are protected. I have the peace of mind that my voice is heard and I’m not just another economic statistic. I have the peace of mind that I do an honest day’s work for an honest day’s wage. I have the peace of mind that I AM A UNION MEMBER!
